The Best Clean Wine!
Have your wine and drink it too!
If you’re like me, as soon as you hit 30 (or let’s be real, more like 25), you discovered drinking even just two glasses of wine led to a hangover the next day! I fell in love with wine when I studied abroad in Florence, Italy and have continued to love it ever since. I’m no connoisseur, but my husband does consider me a wine snob! I’ll take it as a compliment. :) So I was pretty bummed when I started to realize that drinking wine was having a significant impact on my health. I experienced headaches the next day and noticed it was contributing to my gut issues. I know it’s lame, but I really did not want to give up wine. It’s one of those things in life that truly brings me so much joy. Sitting outside in beautiful weather, with friends or family, enjoying a wonderful glass of wine is pure happiness for me.
I started hearing about sulfites in wine and labels like organic, biodynamic, and natural wines. So, as with anything, I decided to start doing some research, and here’s what I found about the wine industry!
Over 50% of wine sales come from 3 giant wine companies
There are 70+ additives approved by the FDA for winemaking, many of which are industrially created and toxic, and unlike other food and beverages, wine does not require an ingredient label
Instead of using native wild yeast most U.S. wine companies use genetically modified (GMO) yeasts during fermentation
The toxic herbicide Roundup is the most widely used in U.S. farming and even organic wines have tested for it. Many other pesticides are also used including Glyphosphate, and grapes in particular are shown to contain high amounts of pesticides according to a study from the Environmental Working Group.
Sulfites are often added to wine to sterilize and preserve the wine
So now what’s a wine loving girl to do with all these terrible facts?! In comes Dry Farm Wines! Prior to trying DryFarms, I did try other organic and biodynamic wines which are shown to be far healthier with lower sulfites and low to no exposure to toxic pesticides. But, honestly, I didn’t like anything I tried and even with choosing organic or biodynamic, there still wasn’t much reassurance since the labels are highly unregulated. Wine labeled organic just means the grapes were grown organically, but it doesn’t mean the winery did not add additional additives and they can still add up to 100ppm sulfites. With Dry Farm wines, I know I can trust what I’m getting. Here are a few things that set their wines apart!
All of their wines from from small family farms produce by old world international growers, that are:
Grown organically AND Biodynamically
SUGAR FREE (<1g/L)
Lower sulfites
Paleo + keto friendly
100% wild natural yeast
NO industrial additives
Their wineries also use a dry farming practice (relies on the moisture from the soil and rainfall) which saves 16,000 gallons of per acre water every year! This is how wine was produced prior to irrigation which was introduced to CA in the 1970’s. As you can imagine, this practice leads to lower crop yields so most wineries no longer use this practice, but it’s significantly better for the environment and produces better wine grapes.
