If you missed my previous blog post about the harmful chemicals lurking in your kitchen, check it out here!
Now that we know all the ingredients we want to avoid, I’m sharing my favorite safer swap options.
Cookware - My go-to recommendation for cookware is always stainless steel, such as All-Clad Pans, or cast iron, such as Lodge. These materials are by far the SAFEST option and the benefit of cast iron is it actually adds iron to your food! Pro tip to save money, check out Good Will or flee markets for cast iron pans. You may find a steal there! You can also go with a lesser-known brand of stainless steel like this Amazon brand pan. If you are a die-hard non-stick cookware kinda person then I recommend ceramic pans such as Green Pan. From my research ceramic is the safest option when it comes to non-stick cookware. However, be sure to never use high heat or a metal spatula as you risk breaking down the ceramic seal and exposing chemicals. Additionally, non-stick cookware does not last forever so once you start seeing cracks, it’s time to toss!
Food storage - there are so many safer food storage options these days that allow you to ditch the plastic. I use these Amazon glass storage containers which can be safely heated in the microwave, in place of plastic Tupperware. For baggies, I love the ZipTop silicone bags. Not only do these cut down on the major waste from single-use plastic bags, but they’re much safer for your health! Use code CLEANLIVINGERICA15 for 15% off your first purchase too! And lastly, in place of plastic wrap, I use Bee's Wraps! Bee’s Wraps are good for up to one year's use and can be used in place of plastic wrap.
Cleaning products - this is a BIG one for toxin exposure. My all-time favorite go-to cleaning products are from Humble Suds. This small, family-owned, and female-run business, makes amazing cleaning products using castor oil soap and essential oils. Their products come in glass to eliminate more harmful toxins from plastics, and to decrease the plastic waste that is impacting our environment. Save 10% with code cleanlivingwitherica. If you want a grocery store option, I also like to recommend Seventh Generation. The price point is comparable to what you’re likely already spending so it’s an easy swap! Be sure to buy their Free and Clear label to avoid those hidden chemicals in fragrance!
Hope this is helpful for your clean swap journey!
